Balloon Sinuplasty in Tarzana

Balloon Sinuplasty - Marc Cohen M.D, Tarzana Surgeon

Balloon Sinuplasty

Balloon sinuplasty, or balloon catheter dilation surgery, is an innovative procedure that helps to clear blocked sinuses. It is recommended for people suffering from chronic sinusitis - a condition that causes swelling and inflammation in the sinus passages for more than 8 weeks.

Chronic sinusitis can be caused by several factors, like an infection, growth of nasal polyps, or a deviated septum. Regardless of the cause, it makes it difficult to breathe via the nose, and may even lead to facial swelling and pain. If other forms of treatment are unsuccessful, Dr. Cohen may recommend balloon sinuplasty to open up the blocked/constricted nasal passageways and drain the accumulated mucus.

The Balloon Sinuplasty Procedure

Balloon sinuplasty is performed by an ENT specialist under local anesthesia.

First, Dr. Cohen will determine whether you're a good candidate for the procedure. Next, he will insert a tiny wire with a tiny flashlight on one end into your sinus cavity, followed by a thin and flexible balloon catheter. Once inside your sinus passage, the balloon will be slowly inflated.

Dr. Cohen will use a saline solution to flush out the built-up mucus and pus in the cavity, while the balloon gently reshapes the bones around your sinuses. This process helps to relieve pressure and widen the sinus passage. The balloon is then removed.

Benefits of the procedure

Compared to traditional treatments, balloon sinuplasty offers fast relief from the symptoms chronic sinusitis because general anesthesia is not needed. This also means fast recovery time, allowing you to resume your normal activities in as little as 48 hours after the procedure.

If you suffer from chronic sinusitis or frequent sinus infections, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Cohen to determine whether Balloon Sinuplasty is right for you.
