Eyelid Surgery
If you have bags under your eyes or droopy eyelids, Dr. Cohen may recommend blepharoplasty, a cosmetic eye surgery that helps to smooth out the eyelids and rejuvenate the area around your eyes, giving you a lively and youthful appearance.
What to expect
Also referred to as eye bag removal or eyelid reduction surgery, blepharoplasty can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids, or even both. The procedure involves the removal of excess fat, skin, and muscle from around your eyes in a single appointment.
If targeting the upper eyelids, Dr. Cohen will make incisions into the natural lines and folds in the lid, moving towards the laughter lines at the corner of your eye. For the lower eyelids, the incision is made just below the eyelashes. This is done to ensure that the scars run along the natural folds of your eyes to make them unnoticeable.
Who needs eyelid surgery?
Blepharoplasty is not always a cosmetic procedure. Some patients may consider eyelid surgery for functional problems to improve vision.
Generally, Dr. Cohen may recommend eye surgery to treat:
- Bags under the eyes
- Puffiness caused by fat deposits in the eyelids
- Loose or sagging skin in the upper eyelid that affects the natural contour and impairs vision
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
- Drooping lower eyelids that cause the white below the iris to appear
Please keep in mind that blepharoplasty cannot change sagging eyebrows, alter dark circles, or even conceal fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. It is important that you discuss your treatment goals and the realistic expected results before surgery.
